Trip Recap

I was hoping to get Terry to write the final entry, but, blogging isn't his thing.  Go figure!

All I can say is "Wow!".  He did it!  What an accomplishment.  Most of us will not undertake the journey he did for numerous reasons, but I think we all agree that we admire him for his tenacity in his journey.  And he made long miles look easy.
Now we need to do the final paperwork.  Print out 4x6 pictures of the the check-in points.

1-first corner starts the actual clock ticking to complete in 26 days.  First corner was:  Blaine, WA

2-second was the first checkpoint in the X pattern just outside Lebanon, KS.  And the picture had to be at the marker.

3-third and 2nd corner was Madawaska, MA.

4-back to Lebanon, KS for the 2nd pass through and a stop at the Lebanon Gas Station for the official picture.

5-3rd corner in Key West, FL.  Picture at the marker of the southern most tip of the US.

6-3rd and final pass through Lebanon, KS and a photo at the Lebanon Post Office.

7-4th and final corner in San Ysidro, CA photo taken at the Post Office.

A total of 12,878 miles traveled according to the GPS, although the odometer calculated 13,535.  Terry says that's the variable in the bikes odometer and the accuracy of the GPS.

Back home safe and sound.

The weather cooperated with only approx 6 hours of rain and a range from the 30's to the 90's.
I am sure there are more stories in his journal to share, but maybe those will come in the future.
Thanks for following along.

Day 17 Saturday

Ok, today is Saturday...I guess I don't need the next 4 blog dates set aside.  He made it home at 1:30pm today.  He stayed last night in Vista CA with my mom.  Got up and left by 5am for San Ysidro CA, the 4th and final corner.  As a close friend said " He doesn't have an iron butt, he has a titanium butt!!"  He should get a trophy for this one!
So, we have settled in, had Chinese for dinner and he is happily watching the playoffs.  Thanks for following the journey.  Hopefully I will have pictures to post this next week.  Between my close to 1000 shots at the photo festival this week and another shoot tomorrow morning,  and his shots I have some work to do, but lovin every minute.  We'll be back soon...
And if he decides to this again, I am going to grab his brother and put him intervention therapy.
Good night all...

No stats...the GPS is freezing......hopefully will get some tomorrow.

Day 16 Friday

It is after 10 here...Terry called around 4:30pm to have me call my mom in Vista to ask if he can stay there for the night.  Now before he called ( I just got off the phone ) I did the route and figured...no way!!  But...he did...
I am dumbfounded.  No stats, the GPS is still on the bike.  He will hit San Ysidro tomorrow and be home tomorrow afternoon!  I am still in shock.

He did say something about 19 hours and 1200+ miles today...and that's all I have to say about that.  My next blog will be when he gets home.

I have to get up at 4am to make a sunrise shoot, I am outa here.  ttfn

Day 13 Tuesday

He first checked in tonight from a recommended restaurant called Pollo Mario in South Orlando.  Featuring Columbian cuisine.   Seems it also has great ratings.  He raved about #40 on the menu.   he He tried plantains for the first time!  And was surprised that I knew what it was, as well as crackle, aka pork rind.

Pollos Mario is best known for its seafood and is home to Columbian cuisine. It's authenticity and atmosphere is matched by no other, right down to the Spanish-speaking service personnel. Entrees include bandeja paisa which consists of white rice, red beans, ground beef, sausage, plantains, morcilla, chicharron, arepa, avocado and a fried egg; cuchuco which is made up of wheat, habas, potatoes, ribs and peas; sancocho, a soup combining vegetables and meat or fish; and ajiaco, an elaborate stew.

He finished dinner and got back to me when he returned to the motel.  He filled me in on the details of the day.

Said the weather was clear and warm, with a thunderstorm just outside of Orlando.  Enough to put the rain jacket on to keep from getting drenched.  But when the sun came out, it created a sauna in the jacket, even though he only had on a t shirt.  Time for fresh clothes in the morning !
He also said that he "kinda" blew a toll.  He saw that it would be $1 and had it ready....in a bill...not coins.  What to do?  Cars are lining up behind him, no one around...so, he did what any responsible citizen would do and stuffed it the best he could into the hole!!  He did tell them at the next toll what happened, they gave him a card with a number to call...after they open back up tomorrow.  So...we will see if we get any mail from Florida.

Speaking of mail, I have now received 4 cards from him...helps with the distance between us right now.  Didn't think it would be ... so quiet

Oh, yes, he made it to the most southern tip of the US in the Keys.  Took his picture by the same marker as in 2008, did the paperwork, turned around and headed north.
Now back to Kansas for the last time.

Day 12 Monday

When I asked if he ran into rain, the response was " Oh gawd YES!"

As expected, rain and more rain with a brief respite.  Enough water on the road that at one point when a truck changed lanes, the car in front of him disappeared into the wave!  He said not big deal, you just come out on the other side, as if that is nothing....I'd be clamped on the handlebars!!    And the rain suit and the Air Hawk are holding tight!

Day 11 Sunday

Day 11 in the books at Manchester, TN.  778.8 miles closer to home.

Terry was quite chatty tonight.  I was trying to take notes.  He said that he passed the World's Largest Ball of Twine West of Kansas City...the things you come across out there.  No time to stop this time, but he would like to cover the ground again with time to stop and see all the sights that he is literally flying by.

He told me he had 2 failures today....this is where I hold my breath and say a little prayer to prepare for whatever is next.  Turns out they were fairly minor.  He started out this morning with no headlight...I said NO headlight, well, the low beam, he rode with the high beam until he found a store with a replacement bulb.
Then the other failure was the Air Hawk cushion for his seat sprung a leak.  Now this piece of equipment is highly critical as it keeps his bum happy for all those hours of sitting.
But, with the patch kits he has, he patched it & he'll see if it holds.  If not, he will be passing by JP Cycles in Ormond FL where he purchased this one 4 years ago.
He strained his back a bit again putting the bike on the center stand.  Time to ice it up, take some Advil, shower and hit the sack.
That's it for today.

Day 10 Saturday

Today's route: Cloverdale IN to Lebanon KS (2nd pass) to Clay Center KS

Day 8 finished with the 2nd check into Lebanon KS and staying in Clay Center, KS.
Clay County Sunset by Jason Erbert

It was a quick chat tonight...He had the opportunity to talk for awhile with his brother, so our conversation was short with pretty much just the stats.  He doesn't take much down time.

He preps the night before for the next day so he can get up and go.  So when he arrives for the evening, it is...find a place to sleep, find a place to eat, prep for the next day, check in with me, shower....go to bed and get up the next day and go.

He had a t-shirt once that said...
ride, eat, sleep, repeat
pretty much says it all
I can't believe I found it online!!
That's it for today...thanks for checking in

Day 9 Friday

It is only 2:30pm here on the west coast, but Terry's day is done.  I got a call around 1pm from Terry asking me to find a BMW dealer in Indianapolis.  I had already done some research, so I knew there was one....
He has a flat front tire...done...done....
He had pulled into a gas station maybe 20 miles out of Indianapolis and when he took it off the center stand noticed how heavy it pushed, looked down and noticed the flat.

Now at this point...I can only literally thank God....those of us that ride and those that know the 2 wheels, know what the consequences could have been at freeway speeds.  So, keep up those prayers, his guardian angel is working overtime today.

The BMW shop, Falcone Powersports of Indianapolis, was fantastic to respond so quickly.  They have picked him up and are going to try to get it fixed today, but it is almost closing time for them.  Will let you know how the evening finished out with the stats later...for now...keep the prayers going...please...and thank you ;)

*********************************************************************
Ok, now the day is being put to bed.  Thanks to the crew at the BMW shop, Terry got picked up, delivered with the bike, valve stem replaced and back on down the road to Cloverdale, Indiana about 25 west of Indianapolis IN.

Terry left them enough money to buy pizza for everyone in the shop tomorrow and payment for the repair.  Can't say enough good about the people, no charge for the pickup and delivery to the shop.

Apparently it is hot, sticky and sweaty and lots of traffic which made the decision easier to get off the road for the night.

Can't help but reflect on the possibilities....diligence...always

Onward to Lebanon KS, looks like thunder showers and wind.....

Day 8 Thursday

Portsmouth, ME

Started out today in 32 degrees....brrrrrrr
And didn't warm up into the 40's!! until he left Portsmouth, ME for the oil change on the bike.  The service guys took him right in even though they knew nothing of his possible arrival.  He also took the opportunity to put on a new rear tire, something that would probably be needed before he got home.

Cold...Cold...Cold
Thank goodness for electric vest, arm chaps, heated grips and seat!!  Needs heated socks!  Tootsies got cold.  But he is headed west tomorrow for Lebanon KS which is still 1300 mi +.  But the weather should be getting warmer.

I think that after he hits Lebanon KS for the 2nd time he will be 1/2 way and then down hill from there.

No stats for today...when you hit reset....it resets....everything...darn, I hate it when that happens.

The only thing we have is:  Total miles for the day...650.7

Econo Lodge, commercial section = order in from Bella Pizza, Meatballs Parmigana
Then it was time for a shower and bed.....and another day in the journey.

Day 7 Wednesday

Madawaska, Maine from the 2008 4 Corners Tour

Day 7...one week in the books.
Today Terry rode from Waterbury Connecticut to the 2nd corner in   Madawaska, Maine on the US and Canadian border to Houlton Maine.  The roads are different on the East coast.  Lots of traffic and many on the road.

I asked him if he could bring me back a red leaf or two.  I can only imagine the change of colors being stunning.  He said that the full spectrum has not turned up as far as he has seen, but he would try to remember to get me some.  He laughed and said he had been dodging them, as it has turned windy and cold, with lows hovering around 42 and highs in the mid 50's.

He checked in at Madawaska, ME around 4pm, did the paperwork, gassed up and put it all in the mail (ride rules) and as soon as he released the envelope, remembered that he did not put the mileage on the ticket, part of the requirements.  I will email them to give them that piece of information.  He then continued on to Houlton, ME for the night.

Houlton, ME

Tomorrow, if the shop is open, he will stop to get the oil changed in Portsmouth, ME at Street Cycles.

He made the appointment before he left.  It was the same place he stopped in 2008.

Day 6 Tuesday

End of Day 6, sorry about the incorrect day for yesterday....didn't catch it until someone pointed it out this morning.

Welcome to Waterbury

He has finished the day at Waterbury CT.  Said there is allot of road construction and authorities monitoring the 65 mph limit.  So the miles are not so easily attained.  He was ready to turn in after our chat, a 3 hour difference now from me.

At one of his 2 nap stops, (didn't sleep well last night) he met a man that asked him where he was from, and when he said California...San Luis Obispo, he said "you mean SLO town?"  Only the locals know that!  Turns out he is from Sonora, both a long way from home.
He was up and awake, not intentionally by 4am and hit the road by 5am, hence, time to turn in to get a good nights sleep.

Day 5 Monday

Just a quick note.  Terry called around 6:45am pst and he had continued east.  Still uncertain of the day.  His back was better than expected, but cold & wet conditions.  He said he would call at his next stop.  I will keep everyone posted....Keep prayers and good thoughts going in his direction.

Brookville, OH

Day 5 in the books.
Attitude adjusted, back doing much better = good day

It is now 3 hrs different from home, good talk, time to get off the phone and prep for tomorrow.  Rain is expected.  Nice to have options of different routes to skirt around some of the weather.
He was able to replace the camelback tip, so water is accessible all day once again.

He mentioned that he did his good deed for the day by putting out a fire in the hotel's mulch outside the lobby.  Somebody had tossed their cigarette into it & off it went.  Another use for the camelback!

Used his McDonald's certificate that he has been hanging onto since we were in Moab UT last year!!  He was so proud of himself  :)

Today's stats:

Day 4 Sunday

Rawlins, WY to Marysville, KS

First run through the geographical center of the USA was today.

Not much to report, approximately 660 miles today.
It will be decided in the morning whether to continue or head home.  The side stand gave way which caused a tip over...no crash...was standing still.  But in picking up the bike he hurt his lower back.  We will see what shape he is tomorrow and whether he will continue or not.  If in pain, no need to proceed at this point.
The only comment other than going over his physical condition, was that there is "corn everywhere!"  I would love to see the country he has covered this far.
His health and well being are first priority...we will see what the morning brings.
Until then...

Day 3 Saturday

 Hermiston OR to Rawlins WY

Hermiston, OR

Day 3 down and in the books.  In his words "got hung out today".  I think doing the 839.5 miles seemed longer to him (seems long to me) ....just little things to adjust to.  His back is challenging him, not bad but constant.  Found a rip in the leg of his rainpants, though they weren't tested today. He felt the back of his leg getting wet and realized that he had  lost the mouthpiece on the Camelback.  He keeps it in a soft cooler strapped to the passenger seat for easy hydration.
Tomorrow, a mere 552 miles to Lebanon, KS for the first pass through.  Then head north east to Madawaska, Maine.
Not too much chit chat tonight.  We are an hour different and he still had things to do before he could turn in.

Missin him....

Rawlins WY
